Upright Freezers Versus Chest Freezers

The ongoing battle between upright freezers and chest freezers is an old one. This debatable topic has stood the test of time and many people have argued their side of the coin. At the end of the day whether you require an upright freezer or a chest freezer or even both, will depend on the functions of your restaurant. So let’s see what makes these two formidable opponents such worthy contenders in the commercial refrigeration industry.

Let’s start with upright freezers.

These freezers offer convenience for the user. All the items are stacked on the various shelves which are easily visible and accessible. With the adjustable shelves you are able to space them to maximise the space in the freezer. You can make narrower shelves for the smaller items such as boxes of patties or larger shelves for bottles of drinks. Thus if you’re looking for a specific item and require it quickly, you simply open the door and reach for the item with minimal to no bending necessary.

Chest freezers also have their positive points.

Chest freezers take up minimal space and offer another table top surface that can be utilised in the restaurant. These freezers are lower in comparison to the upright freezer. They can be stored alongside a table top surface to extend the utilisation space. Chest freezers are more commonly used to freeze items that are not required for immediate use. They are ideal for storing bulk meat products and items that you do not need during the course of the busy day. You can consider chest freezers as your medium to long term freezing buddy. It is not ideal for storing frozen items that you will require during the day as it will take you some time to move the items around in the freezer to find what you’re looking for. However, it is great for the stocking up on food items that you only need to retrieve once a day, ideally in the morning before the busy day starts. These commercial freezers are durable and hardworking kitchen equipment that should last for years.

There are distinct differences between the two types of freezers and the functionality is also very different. So it is up to you which of the two will suit your restaurant best. In most cases both are required in the optimal running of a successful restaurant. After all, every restaurant needs to optimise their time management while keeping the food fresh.
